December 17 (SeeNews) - The European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) has admitted Serbia as its 23rd member state, the organisation said.
Serbia's membership will become effective upon completion of the related accession and notification procedures, CERN said in a statement on Friday.
The admission of Serbia was approved at the 191st session of the Council of CERN on December 13, the organisation said.
Serbia has been an associate member in the pre-stage to membership of CERN since March 2012.
CERN was established in 1954, and the former Yugoslavia was among the 12 founding states.
The organisation's main purpose is to provide the particle accelerators and other infrastructure needed for high-energy physics research.
