December 22 (SeeNews) - Bulgaria's sole nuclear power plant (NPP) Kozloduy is signing on Thursday a contract with Westinghouse Electric Sweden for the supply of fresh nuclear fuel for the plant's 1000-megawatt unit 5, the energy ministry said.
The agreement is in line with NPP Kozloduy’s programme for the diversification of fresh nuclear fuel supplies, the ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.
The signing of the contract is in line with a decision of the Bulgarian parliament to speed up the process of securing an alternative supplier for the power plant, which is currently using fuel delivered by Russian company TVEL.
A similar agreement is also being prepared with France's Framatome for the supply of fuel for the power plant's other 1000-MW unit, the ministry said.
With the second deal, Bulgaria will achieve full diversification and security of supply, the ministry added.
