March 26 (SeeNews) - Bulgaria's government said on Friday that it allocated an additional 46 million levs ($27.8 million/23.5 million euro) for the purchase of remdesivir, a medicine used in the treatment of COVID-19.
The new financing brings the total government expenditure for the purchase of remdesivir to 90 million levs, which should be enough to procure some 100,000 doses, the government said in a statement.
The funds allocated to date should be enough to secure the country's needs until the end of September, the government noted.
Remdesivir is manufactured by US-based company Gilead Sciences and sells under the Veklury brand name. Veklury was the first medicine approved by the European Commission for treatment of COVID-19.
According to data published by the health ministry on Friday, there are 321,104 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Bulgaria, of which 64,120 still active.
