November 21 (SeeNews) - Bulgaria's government plans to pay a further 92.2 million levs ($50.1 million/47.1 million euro) until the end 2019 to extend the life of units 5 and 6 of nuclear power plant (NPP) Kozloduy, country's energy minister said.
The country has already paid 130.8 million levs towards the extension of the life of the two units, energy minister Temenuzhka Petkova said in a written reply to a question by a member of parliament.
The plant's units 5 and 6, of 1,000 MW each, have licences to operate until 2017 and 2019, respectively. The extension of their life by at least 30 years is estimated to cost 220 million euro ($234 million).
According to Petkova, however, the costs on the project will be lower than planned.
Kozloduy NPP remained with two operational units - Units 5 and 6 - after the country closed down four units of 440 MW each to address nuclear safety concerns of the European Union prior to its accession to the bloc. Bulgaria joined the EU in 2007.
