January 11 (SeeNews) - Bulgaria's defence ministry will approach its Austrian counterpart over the potential acquisition of utility vehicles, to be used by Bulgarian army personnel assisting police in border protection, the government in Sofia decided on Wednesday.
The acquisition will significantly improve the ability to control the refugee flow across Bulgaria's land borders, the government said in a press release following a weekly meeting.
In September, the EU granted Bulgaria 108 million euro ($113.6 million) in emergency funding to help the country improve border management and tackle migration flow.
In January-November 2016, 18,603 foreign nationals have been registered with Bulgaria's state agency for refugees, according to data from the agency.
