January 16 (SeeNews) - Bulgaria collected 352 million levs ($219.8 million/180.0 million euro) from the sale of road tax vignette stickers last year, an increase of 25 million levs over 2016, the Road Infrastructure Agency said on Tuesday.
Revenues from the sale of vignette stickers for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes amounted to 103 million levs in 2017, while lighter vehicles accounted for 249 million levs, the government agency said in a statement.
Sales of vignette stickers for 2018, which started on December 22 last year, have contributed 22.5 million levs thus far.
On Monday, Bulgaria's regional development ministry signed a 150 million levs contract with a consortium led by Austria's Kapsch Group to develop and introduce an electronic road-toll collection system.
The system, which will cover vehicles weighing over 3.5 tonnes, must be introduced within 19 months. Revenue is projected at 1.0 billion levs in the first year after the introduction of the system.
