SOFIA (Bulgaria), April 11 (SeeNews) – Bulgaria ranked last on the first ever scoreboard on transport in the European Union (EU), the European Commission said.
The scoreboard compares member state performance in 22 transport-related categories, the Commission said on Thursday in a notice published on its website.
Bulgaria has positive scores in three categories and performs poorly in terms of another nine indicators, according to the Commission data. The country has an overall score of -6, which makes it the worst performer in the ranking. "It records high average CO2 emissions from new passenger cars, but performs well from a maritime perspective. Its innovation scores are low, but it is doing well on transposition and infringements," the Commission said.
In Southeast Europe, Romania and Croatia, both had a negative overall score of -3, according to the transport scoreboard data. Romania had four positive and seven negative scores. It had the highest market share of competitors in rail freight transport and the highest number of road fatalities per million inhabitants in the EU. However, the country’s rail infrastructure is rated poorly.
Due to its recent accession, Croatia has not been included in all assessment categories; it has one positive and four negative scores. It has a high motorway density, but needs to improve its road safety score, the Commission noted.
Slovenia, on the other hand, had an overall score equal to zero. It scored amongst the bottom performers for logistics. However, Slovenia has the EU's highest motorway density and very few pending infringement cases. It also has the highest percentage of innovative transport companies.
