January 23 (SeeNews) - Bulgaria's National Railway Infrastructure Company (NRIC) announced the launch of a 275 million levs ($152.6 million/140.6 million euro) project for the upgrade of a railway section in western Bulgaria, part of a major railroad to Serbia.
The project for overhaul of the railway section between the village of Petarch and the town of Dragoman was awarded to the Bulgarian unit of Greek construction company Terna, state-owned NRIC said in a statement.
Under the project, 17 kilometres of single track will be doubled while a further 4 kilometres of single track will be modernised. The project is part of a larger contract for the modernisation of a longer railway section between Voluyak and Dragoman. The overall contract awarded to Terna is valued at 363 million levs, according to an earlier statement by the company. The contract has a term of 48 months.
In July, the European Commission (EC) approved the disbursement of over 110 million euro ($110.8 million) for the first phase of the Voluyak - Dragoman overhaul project.
