August 27 (SeeNews) - The transport ministry of Bosnia's Serb Republic and the Republic's railway operator Zeljeznice Republike Srpske are considering the construction of an intermodal terminal with the aim to improve cargo transport in the entity, the ministry said.
The optimal location for the transport-logistics centre would be in Doboj, in northern Bosnia, since the town has the largest railway station in the country plus excellent road and railway links, the ministry said in a statement last week.
The statement was issued following a visit of representatives of the ministry and state-owned Zeljeznice RS to Austria where they held cooperation talks with the management of Rail Cargo Austria and visited the company's intermodal terminal in Vienna.
The intermodal terminal will help to concentrate and centralise the flow of goods in order to raise the efficiency of railway transport in the Serb Republic entity and in whole of Bosnia, the ministry explained.
The anticipated benefits include favourable transport prices, the opening of new markets, increasing the volume of cargo carried by Zeljeznice RS, increasing exports and strengthening the Serb Republic's economy and its competitiveness on the European market, the statement concluded.
The Serb Republic os one of two autonomous entities that form Bosnia and Herzegovina. The other entity is the Federation.
