January 5 (SeeNews) - Traffic at Bosnia's Sarajevo international airport reached a record-high 957,969 passengers in 2017, up 14% year on year, the airport operator said on Friday.
"Behind us is the most successful year in the history of this airport, and everything indicates that the records will continue throughout the year ahead," the operator of the Sarajevo airport told SeeNews in an emailed statement.
In 2017, Sarajevo airport registered 12,775 aircraft movements, up 12% on the year, and transported 2.96 million kg of cargo or 3% more than in 2016.
In December alone, the airport served 50,218 passengers.
Sarajevo International Airport broke two more records in the past year. In July, it registered passenger traffic of 140,025, an increase by as much as 28% year-on-year and the highest tage increase in the history of the airport.
In August, the airport recorded 144,166 passengers, setting the record for the highest number of passengers in one month.
In 2017, six new airline operators launched flights to and from Sarajevo. This trend is set to continue in 2018 and is expected to boost passenger numbers to above 1 million, the airport said.
Sarajevo Airport recently launched an expansion project and will soon tackle the construction of a new terminal building, which will enable it to serve 2 million passengers annually.
