February 11 (SeeNews) - The Belgrade city government plans to launch the construction of metro network in the Serbian capital at the end of 2020, deputy mayor Goran Vesic has said.
"Our priority is to build the metro network valued at around 3.8 billion euro ($4.1 billion)," Vesic said in a press release on Monday.
After the completion of the project, about 30% of city traffic will be moved below ground, Vesic said.
Last month, municipally-owned metro system operator Belgrade Metro and Train launched a tender for the preparation of a geotechnical study for the construction of a section of the first underground railway line in the Serbian capital. The section is planned to include 2.3 kilometers of lines above ground with three stations, 2.8 kilometers shallow below ground with two stations, and 11.6 kilometers deep below ground - a tunnel with 12 stations.
According to the preliminary design of the project, the Belgrade metro network will consist of two lines - of 22 km and 19.8 km in length, respectively - and will also integrate four urban railway lines.
