September 12 (SeeNews) - Belgrade airport was temporarily closed early on Wednesday due to an accident during the arrival of an Egypt Air jet, the executive director of airport operator Aerodrom Nikola Tesla [BEL:AERO], Zarko Suvacarov, said.
"An emergency situation occurred at the airport after an Egypt Air jet operating a charter flight landed with burst tires, blocking the runway," Suvacarov said in a video file posted on the website of public broadcaster RTS.
The aircraft carried no passengers and no crew members were injured, according to Serbian media reports.
The airport is expected to reopen on Wednesday afternoon, Serbian infrastructure minister Zorana Mihajlovic said in comments aired live by private broadcaster TV Prva.
Currently, representatives of all relevant authorities are at the place of the accident and are doing everything possible to remove the aircraft from the runway, in order to allow the reopening of the airport to traffic, Suvacarov said in the video file.
In January, Serbia's government said it expects the operator of Belgrade airport Nikola Tesla to invest in the construction of an alternative runway and expand the passenger terminals.
