April 16 (SeeNews) - Austria's PORR said it has won a tender for a 129 million euro ($146 million) contract for the design and construction of Lot 1 of the motorway linking Sibiu to Pitesti in Romania.
The design phase must be completed within twelve months, while construction works will take 36 months and will begin in spring 2020, PORR said in a statement on Monday.
The 123-kilometre long motorway from Sibiu to Pitesti is situated along the trans-European Rhine-Danube corridor which is serving as one of Europe's most important links to the Black Sea. It is also the first motorway through the Carpathian mountains in Romania and the first to connect the country's historical regions of Transylvania and Wallachia.
"This is already the third large-scale motorway construction project implemented by PORR in Romania. Our lot is the first section of the route from Sibiu to Pitesti, an East-West link of critical importance to Romania in terms of traffic", PORR CEO Karl-Heinz Strauss said.
The general contractor's assignment involves the design and construction of the four-lane motorway section from Sibiu to Boita in central Romania. The contract covers the construction of twelve bridges as part of the motorway as well as an overpass. The most impressive bridge will be a 650 m-long viaduct over a valley. In addition, PORR will build two motorway junctions, a car parking and a road maintenance centre.
