TIRANA (Albania), November 1 (SeeNews) – Albania's parliament said on Thursday it approved an agreement with Montenegro to open a joint border crossing point that is expected to enhance economic links between the two EU candidate countries.
The construction of Zogaj-Skje border crossing will be financed through a 6 million euro ($6.8 million) grant provided under the EU’s Instrument for Pre-accession Assistance (IPA), the parliament said in a press release.
The new border crossing is expected to facilitate the movement of vehicles and people as well as boost economic development in the area, it added.
The parliament also said it approved an EU grant agreement worth 1.7 million euro between the European Commission, Albania and Montenegro, to be used to finance cross-border projects in the two countries under the IPA II cooperation programme. The grant will be complemented by a 300,000 euro fund co-financed by Albania and Montenegro.
In November 2017, Albania and Montenegro inaugurated the Tuzi railway station located on their common border. The railway station is part of a joint initiative to offer more services at the border crossing point of Hani i Hotit located opposite the Montenegrin town of Tuzi, Albanian minister of infrastructure Damian Gjiknuri said at the time.
