TIRANA (Albania), December 4 (SeeNews) – Albania's state-owned power corporation KESH has applied for a building permit for the construction of a floating solar park of 12.9 megawatt peaks (MWp) in the northern part of the country, the energy ministry said.
The solar panels will sit on the surface of the water reservoir of the Vau i Dejes hydro power plant (HPP), the energy ministry said in a statement on Monday.
The electricity produced by the planned solar park will be traded on the free market.
The ministry provided no details on the cost and implementation timetable of the project.
Albania's state-owned power transmission system operator OST has agreed in principle to connect the plant to the grid once it is built, KESH said earlier this year. The floating solar park will spread on an area of 118,000 square metres, KESH said.
Albania produces over 90% of its electricity from HPPs, most of it from three power stations along the Drin river, in the northern part of the country.
