December 24 (SeeNews) - Albania has registered its first cases of the novel Omicron variant of COVID-19, local media reported.
Two samples of the Omicron variant were detected in tests carried out in Germany, news provider Exit reported on Thursday.
However, the government does not plan to tighten restrictions, as the existing preventive measures will remain in place, according to the media report.
Albania recently decided to lift the night curfew on New Year's Eve to allow citizens to celebrate. The Albanian government imposed a nationwide night curfew to limit the spread of the virus in November 2020. Currently, the curfew starts at 11 pm and ends at 6 am.
According to data from the World Health Organisation, the number of COVID-19 cases confirmed since the outbreak of the pandemic in Albania, a country with a population of 2.8 million, totalled 206,616 as of Thursday. The number of coronavirus-related deaths was 3,180. As of December 23, 2021, a total of 2,256,942 vaccine doses have been administered in the country.
