SOFIA (Bulgaria), April 7 (SeeNews) - AES Bulgaria, a unit of U.S.-based energy conglomerate AES Corporation, said on Wednesday that its thermal power plant (TPP) AES Galabovo and the St. Nikola wind farm produced a combined 976 GWh of electricity in the first quarter of 2021.

TPP AES Galabovo generated 860 GWh of electricity, while the St. Nikola wind farm produced 117 GWh in the first quarter, AES Bulgaria said in a statement,

In March alone, the thermal power plant generated 322 GWh, while the wind farm produced roughly 40 GWh.

The St. Nikola wind farm located near the town of Kavarna, on the Black Sea coast, consists of 52 turbines of 3 MW each. It was built in 2009 and commenced operations in 2010. The wind farm is operated by AES Geo Energy, which is majority-owned by AES Bulgaria.

The wind park accounts for about 22% to the total installed electricity generation capacity from wind power in Bulgaria, according to AES Bulgaria.

In 1999, a unit of U.S.-based energy conglomerate AES Corporation purchased the majority interest in Bulgaria's Maritsa East 1 project, subsequently renamed AES Galabovo in 2009. AES completed the full acquisition of the thermal power plant from Ireland's Consolidated Continental Commerce Limited (3C) in 2005.
