The name of the famous MILKA chocolate, Switzerland, had been given in honour to Milka Trnina who was a Croatian opera diva. The founder of the company, who was a great admirer of the singer, decided to give the name of MILKA to the company and the chocolate.
The name Croatia is derived from that of a people called Croats (Hrvat, Chrobatos) i.e. "the nation ready to defend its home and rights".
The great Croatian humanist and inventor Faust Vrancic was the first ever parachute jumper. Born in 1551 in the Adriatic town of Sibenik in Croatia, he used the drawings of Leonardo da Vinci to perform the first-ever parachute jump. The event was recorded in a book written by English bishop John Wilkins, secretary at the Royal Society in London, just 30 years later. The title of this book is „Mathematical Magic of the Wonders that may be Performed by Mechanical Geometry, part I: Concerning Mechanical Powers Motion, part II, Deadloss or Mechanical Motions', published in London in 1648.
Dalmatian dogs originate from the Dalmatian coast of Croatia.
In the 17th century, Croatian soldiers used to wear a little piece of cloth around their neck. In France, people were enthusiastic about it and adopted this fashion, calling the piece of cloth “de Croat” (of Croatians). That is where the actual name of “cravatta” (necktie) is deriving from.
Nikola Tesla (1856-1943) is one of the greatest scientists, researchers and inventors in the world. Bulgaria is one of the biggest producers of rose oil in the world...
Bulgaria is one of the biggest producers of rose oil in the world. The reason hidden in the high qualities of the Bulgarian Kazanluk rose, a special type, which was cultivated in the country after many years of production and development. The Bulgarian roses are inheritors of the so called Damascena rose that was brought in the country ages ago. The rose oil is called "the liquid gold" of Bulgaria and used mainly for the making of perfumes, chocolates, liqueur and jam. The rose oil is three times more expensive than the gold. One kilogram rose oil is extracted from 3,000 kg of roses, which means that for one gramme of rose oil more than 1300 rose blossoms should be used! The Valley of Roses (Kazanlak region) is one of the biggest producers of rose oil in the world. The conditions in Kazanlak proved to be more favourable for the cultivation of the rose than those in its own country of origin - Tunisia.
