National Movement for Simeon II was established in 2001 by Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (Simeon II), the son of the last monarch who ruled Bulgaria until 1943. He is the only monarch in history who became head of the government after democratic elections. The party is a liberal, centrist party, member of the Liberal International. In the 2001 elections it won a landslide victory, securing 120 out of 240 seats. During its four-year rule the party’s and its leader’s popularity declined though at the last elections it ranked second political power and is currently part of the ruling coalition.
