October 6 (SeeNews) - Norwegian telecoms group Telenor plans to invest in the further digitalisation of the Serbian society via its unit, which marked 10 years of operations on the Serbian market on Thursday, the government said.
The company wants to engage in digitalisation projects in Serbia because the new tech solutions improve the quality of people's lives while also benefiting the private sector, the Serbian government said in a statement, quoting Telenor Serbia CEO, Ingeborg Ofsthus.
Ofsthus met with Serbia's prime minister Aleksandar Vucic and cabinet ministers to discuss joint initiatives and issues in telecommunications relating to regulations and market development.
Telenor, the largest single investor in Serbia, has directed more than 445 million euro ($497.9 million) towards the development of infrastructure and services in the country over the past 10 years.
In August, Serbia's Regulatory Agency for Electronic Communications and Postal Services (Ratel) said it has extended by 10 years Telenor's licence for providing mobile services in the country.
Telenor's wireless unit competes on the Serbian market with the mobile arm of Telekom Srbija, MTS, and VIP Mobile, a unit of Telekom Austria.
Telenor Serbia also holds a licence for fixed-line telecommunications networks and services.
