October 11 (SeeNews) - Romania's energy production fell by 8% year-on-year to 13.49 million tonnes of oil equivalent (TOE) in the first eight months of 2016, provisional data from the country's statistics office, INS, showed on Tuesday.
Energy imports into the country rose 13.5% on the year to 8.14 million TOE.
Production of primary energy resources decreased by 0.9% on the year to 21.6 million TOE, according to INS data.
Romania's own electricity output plus imports totalled 45.9 TWh in 2016 through August, unchanged from last year, while the country's exports of electricity dropped 18.3% to 5.49 TWh.
Thermal power plants generated some 16.48 TWh in the January-August period, down 5.4% on the year, whereas the output of hydroelectric power stations rose 15.5% to 14.01 TWh.
The production of the country's sole nuclear power plant fell 4% to 7.27 TWh.
Wind farms generated 4.18 TWh, down 11.5%, and solar plants produced 1.42 TWh, down 5.5% on the year.
Final electricity consumption rose by an annual 4.3% to 36.5 TWh.
Romania also produced 2.40 million TOE of crude oil, down 4.5% year-on-year; 4.96 million TOE of natural gas, down 3%; and 2.65 million TOE of coal, down 11.5%, in the first eight months of 2016.
TOE is the rounded-off amount of energy that would be produced by burning one metric tonne of crude oil.
