Romania's government approved a 22.2 million lei ($5.3 million/4.5 million euro) state-aid scheme for five airports in the country affected by the coronavirus crisis.
The measure aims to compensate for financial losses suffered by the airports in Iasi, Bacau, Cluj, Craiova and Sibiu due to restrictions on air travel imposed by authorities in order to curb the spread of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19), the government said in a press release.
The scheme, which must be approved by the European Commission (EC), is targeting regional airports in Romania with a passenger traffic between 200,000 people and 1 million people per year each.
In August, the EC approved Romania's 1 million euro ($1.17 million) scheme aimed at supporting Traian Vuia International Airport in Timisoara.
In July, the EC approved another 1 million euro scheme to support airlines starting or resuming operations at Oradea airport in the context of the coronavirus pandemic.
