Compared to the first half of 2007, in the first half of 2008 the volume of postal services and mobile telephony services increased but the volume of fixed telephony services decreased.

The volume of national postal traffic was in the first half of 2008 by 10% larger

Compared to the same period of 2007, Pošta Slovenije dispatched about ten percent more postal items in the first half of 2008. Concerning the international traffic the number of postal items directed abroad is slightly smaller, while the volume of incoming postal items increased by 8%. The number of postal items dispatched in national traffic increased even more.

Observing the monthly realisation, January and February did not reach the monthly average of the first half of 2008. In March and April the number of all postal items significantly exceeded the monthly average, then it fell, but it remained at least one percent over the monthly average until June.

Quarterly data show that the national traffic from April to June exceeded the realisation of both the same period of 2007 and the previous quarter. Total international traffic was lower in both quarterly comparisons.

The volume of fixed telephony services (the duration of outgoing calls) decreases persistently

Having realized 399 million minutes in the second quarter of 2008, the traffic on fixed telephony was a little under the level of the same quarter of 2007 and a good deal under the level of the previous quarter. The cumulative results also did not reach the level of the first half of 2007.

As regards the direction of calls, data show that national traffic fell in all compared periods. The volume of international traffic decreased only compared to the previous quarter, while the half year result was positive, exceeding the January - June 2007 period by 2%.

The decrease in traffic when the second quarter is compared to the first quarter was to be anticipated – the realisation in the second quarter has been for years lagging behind the realisation in the first quarter (in the last 5 years from between 5% and 8%).

Almost 864 thousand main telephones lines on fixed location were in use at the end of June 2008. One fifth of them belonged to the contemporary internet technology of the terminal equipment (VoIP connections), but, on the other hand, more than a half of all lines were still connected to the analogous network (classical PSTN lines).

67% of all telephone traffic derives from the mobile networks

In the second quarter of 2008 users of the mobile telephone network realized 796 million minutes of outgoing traffic, a 10% increase over the same quarter of 2007. In this comparison both national and international traffic grew with nearly equal dynamics; however, international traffic accounts for only 4% of all mobile telephony (within fixed telephony the share of duration of international calls is larger – 7%).

The increase in traffic is noticed in the half year period, too. Compared to the first half of 2007 the national traffic increased more (by over 10%) than the international traffic (by almost 4%).

The traffic mentioned above was realized by almost 2 million users of the mobile network during the second quarter of 2008. Most of them are mobile network subscribers having a contract with the operator. Their share has been increasing on account of prepaid users for the last few years. This could be confirmed also with the fact that compared to June 2007 the number of subscribers increased much more than the number of prepaid users.
