CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ROMANIAN INTERNATIONAL TRADE DURING 1.I-31.VIII 2008

FOB exports during 1.I-31.VIII 2008, amounted to 82553.9 million lei (22666.4 million euro). Compared with the corresponding period of 2007, exports increased with 31.0% at values expressed in lei (18.5% at values expressed in euro).

The difference between exports dynamics based on values expressed in lei and that based on values expressed in euro is due to national currency depreciation of 8.8% in January 2008, 8.0% in February 2008, 10.5% in March 2008 , 9.2% in April 2008, 11.4% in May 2008, 13.3% in June 2008, 14.2% in July 2008 and 9.4 in August 2008 as against the corresponding months of 2007.

In the structure of exports, six sections of the Combined Nomenclature hold 76.5% of total exports, as follows:

The main structural modifications came up in the evolution of exports by CN8 sections in the period 1.I-31.VIII 2008 as against 1.I-31.VIII 2007, consists of:
- increasing weight for sections: “Mineral products” – with 3.5 percentage points, “Vegetable products” – with 1.5 percentage points, “Chemicals products” – with 1.0 percentage points;
- decreasing weight for sections: “Textiles and textiles articles” – with 3.3 percentage points, “Base metals and articles of base metals” – with 1.5 percentage points, “Footwear, headgear, umbrellas and similar articles - with 1.1 percentage points.

Exports of machinery and mechanical appliances; electrical equipment; sound and image recorders and reproducers, representing 22.6% of total exports in the period 1.I-31.VIII 2008, hold the first place and registered a growth of 36.4% at values expressed in lei (23.3% at values expressed in euro) in comparison with the corresponding period of 2007. In this section, the chapter "Electric machinery, appliances and equipment and parts thereof” holds the main weight (59.2% in total section and 13.4% in total exports).

Exports of base metals and articles of base metals hold the second place as weight in total exports, registering a growth of 19.8% at values expressed in lei (8.4% at values expressed in euro) as against 1.I-31.VIII 2007. Within this section, an important weight was held by the chapter “Pig-iron, iron and steel”, representing 54.0% of total section and 8.5% of total exports and “Pig-iron, iron and steel products”, representing 22.1% of total section and 3.5% of total exports.

The third place is held by the section ”Vehicles and associated transport equipment” with 11.7% in total exports, where exports of “Vehicles, tractors and other ground vehicles” represent 70.4% of total section and 8.2% of total exports.

Exports of textiles and textiles articles, hold the fourth place and registered a growth of 0.8% at values expressed in lei (a decrease with 9.0% at values expressed in euro) in comparison with the corresponding period of 2007. Within this section, exports of clothing articles and accessories, other than knitted or crocheted represented 58.8% of total section and 6.3% of total exports. Also, exports of clothing and accessories knitted or crocheted had a weight of 20.5% in total section and 2.2% in total exports.

The next positions in the top are held by the following sections:
- ”Mineral products” with 10.3% of total exports, where exports of petroleum products (spirit, gas oil, oils) represent 97.7% of total section and 10.1% of total exports;
- ”Plastics, rubber and articles thereof” with a weight of 5.3% of total exports.

In the period 1.I-31.VIII 2008, in comparison with the corresponding period of 2007, exports to the European Union countries (EU 26) increased with 26.9% at values expressed in lei (14.7% at values expressed in euro), registering a weight of 69.7% in total exports.

Partner countries holding the first 10 places in the total amount of exports in the period 1.I-31.VIII 2008 (representing 66.8% of total exports) were the following: Germany (15.9% of total exports ), Italy (15.5%), Turkey (7.6%), France (7.3%), Hungary (5.3%), Bulgaria (4.3%), United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northen Ireland (3.3%), Netherlands (2.7%), Ukraine (2.7%), Spain (2.2%).

In August 2008, FOB exports amounted 9325.0 million lei (2630.3 million euro), with 29.6% more compared with August 2007 at values expressed in lei (with 16.8% more compared with August 2007 at values expressed in euro).

CIF imports during 1.I-31.VIII 2008 amounted to 135734.4 million lei (37262.0 million euro). Compared with the corresponding period of 2007, imports grew of 26.9% at values expressed in lei (14.8% at values expressed in euro).

In the structure of imports, six sections of the Combined Nomenclature hold 76.8% of total imports, as follow:

Imports of machinery and mechanical appliances; electrical equipment; sound and image recorders and reproducers, holding 22.9% of total imports, increased with 16.8% at values expressed in lei (5.6% at values expressed in euro) as against 1.I-31.VIII 2007.

The two chapters of this section hold the following weights: the products in the chapter ”Boilers, turbines, engines, mechanical devices and apparatus and parts thereof” hold 54.4% of total section and 12.4% of total imports while the products under the chapter ”Electric machinery, appliances and equipment, TV sound and video reproduction and recording apparatus” had a weight of 45.6% in total section and 10.5% in total imports.

Imports of mineral products were with 59.9% more at values expressed in lei (44.8% at values expressed in euro) compared with the period 1.I-31.VIII 2007. Within this section, chapter “Fuel and mineral oils” held a weight of 90.9% in total section and 13.4% in total imports.

Imports of vehicles and associated transport equipment also registered significant growths as against 1.I-31.VIII 2007 (25.4% at values expressed in lei and 13.2% at values expressed in euro), due to imports registered in the chapter ”Cars, tractors, other vehicles”, which represented 94.6% of total section and 12.8% of total imports.

The section “Base metals and articles of base metals“, with a weight of 11.5% in total imports, registered a growth of 28.7% at values expressed in lei (16.4% at values expressed in euro) as against the corresponding period of 2007.

Imports of chemicals products, with a weight of 8.1% in total imports increased with 35.6% at values expressed in lei (22.6% at values expressed in euro) as against the corresponding period of the previous year.

Imports of textiles and textiles articles, with a weight of 6.1% in total imports, have increased with 4.8% at values expressed in lei (have decrease with 5.3% at values expressed in euro) as against imports of similar products in the period 1.I-31.VIII 2007. Imports of wool, cotton, synthetic or artificial fibres fabrics and special fabrics represented 51.3% of total section.

The increase of exports of goods compared with imports, as against 1.I-31.VIII 2007 has been determined mainly by:

* for exports:
- the increase of exports “Fuel and mineral oils” in value with 97.6% at values expressed in lei (79.1% at values expressed in euro) as against 1.I-31.VIII 2007;
- the increase of exports of chapter ”Electric machinery, appliances and equipment, TV sound and video reproduction and recording apparatus”, expressed in value, with 41.8% at values in lei (28.3% at values in euro) as against 1.I-31.VIII 2007;

* for imports:
structural modifications came up in the evolution of imports by CN sections in the period 1.I-31.VIII 2008 as against the corresponding period of 2007, as follow:
- the decrease of imports of ”Electric machinery, appliances and equipment, TV sound and video reproduction and recording apparatus” with 2.0 percentage points;
- the decrease of imports of “Textiles and textiles articles” with 1.3 percentage points.

In August 2008, CIF imports amounted to 15487.6 million lei (4365.5 million euro), more compared with August 2007 with 19.1% at values expressed in lei (7.2% at values expressed in euro).

In the period 1.I-31.VIII 2008, as against the corresponding period of 2007, imports from the other 26 European Union countries increased with 22.4% at values expressed in lei (10.5% at values expressed in euro), registering a weight of 68.6% in total imports.

Partner countries holding the first 10 places in total amount of imports in the period 1.I-31.VIII 2008 (representing 69.9% of total imports) were the following: Germany (16.4% of total imports), Italy (11.5%), Hungary (6.9%), Russian Federation (6.7%), France (5.8%), Turkey (5.2%), Austria (4.9%), Kazahstan (4.9%), China (3.9%), Netherlands (3.7%).

CIF-FOB trade balance during 1.I-31.VIII 2008 amounted to 53180.5 million lei (14595.6 million euro), with 9296.2 million lei (1263.1 million euro) more compared with the period 1.I-31.VIII 2007.
