The drilling operation will last for some 20 days and will be followed by 15 more days of tests on the well, a statement announced.
The well is drilled in order to confirm the volume of the estimated gas resources and to convert those resources into reserves. It will also be used for production in the future.
The Doina gas discovery contains 2.0 billion cu m of gas resources. The overall resources of the Doina and neighbouring Ana discoveries come in at 5.8 billion cu m, in which the interest of Gas Plus corresponds to some 900 million cu m of gas.
(Editor's note: In October 2007 Gas Plus agreed to acquire a 15 pct working interest in Romania's Midia and Pelican offshore blocks, which contain the Doina discovery, SeeNews reported on October 23, 2008. The stake was bought from the blocks' operator, Canada’s Sterling Resources. Gas Plus acquired the interest via its subsidiary Gas Plus International, which is handling the international exploration and production activities of the company. Gas Plus's international asset portfolio is made up of 14 exploration licences, comprising 10 in the UK, two onshore in Poland and two offshore Romania.)
