The Wight Sky ferry, which can carry 65 vehicles and 360 passengers, is the second in a series of three ships that Wightlink has commissioned to the Kraljevica shipyard. The Croatian shipyard has to deliver the third one by the end of the year.
Wightlink operates a round-the-clock service between the English mainland and the Isle of Wight.
Vjesnik quoted the shipyard's general manage Irvin Badurina as saying that the contracted price of each of the ferries was 9.9 million euro. The rise in the price of the Wight Sky ferry was due to additional works ordered by Wightlink.
Badurina was not immediately available to comment.
Kraljevica’s book of orders is filled until the end of 2011. Besides the third ferry to Wightlink, it has to deliver two asphalt tankers and a passenger-cargo ship to different foreign owners, Vjesnik reported. The construction of four corvettes and 10 patrol boats for the Libyan Navy is expected to start soon at the shipyard.
The Croatian shipbuilding sector has a long tradition and a solid reputation. In May, the cabinet decided to offer for sale 79.10% of Uljanik Shipyard, 98.62% of Kraljevica, 95.17% of Brodotrogir, 81.59% of shipyard 3. Maj in Rijeka and 99.44% of Brodosplit.
