Bulgaria’s soft drink consumption rose by 11 pct year-on-year in the first half of 2008, showed data by the Bulgarian Soft Drink Association.

Ready-to-drink (RTD) tea and energy drink sales rose the highest, by respective 48 and 51 pct. They have the smallest market share but have shown the most dynamic growth. Bulgaria ranks second in Europe in terms of per capita consumption of RDT tea and energy drinks.

In terms of quantity, bottled water consumption jumped the highest - by 36 million litres. Bottled water prices added 5.0 to 7.0 pct in the period due to higher transport costs.

Consumption of fizzy drinks went up by 7.0 pct. Demand for cola- and light-type drinks was highest and their prices stayed flat over the growing sales of bigger bottles.

Consumption of non-carbonated drinks rose by 8.0 pct. The most popular type was instant drinks.

Demand for fruit juices surged by 20 pct.

The association sees 2008 soft drinks per capita consumption up by 11 pct year-on-year.
