The closure of two units of Bulgaria's Kozloduy nuclear power station led to a pick-up in demand from local power stations and a 110% increase in domestic coal production to 28.4 mln tons last year, said the Bulgarian Chamber of Mining and Geology. The Maritsa Iztok mining company alone produced 24 mln tons. The thermal power plants buy 97% of the locally mined coal; the rest is sold to households. All 17 of the nation's coal mining businesses averaged higher output year-on-year in '07. The highest wholesale price recorded was 130 levs/t.
