December 21 (SeeNews) - Moldova's defence ministry said it has obtained an aerial surveillance system from French defence company Thales amid ongoing airspace violations by Russian missiles targeting Ukraine.
Funds for the acquisition, whose value was not disclosed, were secured from the national defence budget, the ministry said on Wednesday.
Moldova revealed plans in September to buy Thales' Ground Master 200 (GM 200) radar, boasting a range of up to 250 kilometres (155 miles) for aircraft monitoring.
The purchase comes amid reports of Russian missiles repeatedly breaching Moldova's airspace in the context of the war in Ukraine, with missile debris having been discovered in Moldova's Transdniestria region.
"The latest incidents of airspace violations of our country have brought to the attention of the authorities the urgent need to strengthen the defense capabilities of the Republic of Moldova," said Anatolie Nosatii, the country's defence minister, in a social media post on Wednesday.
